In 1894, Agua Negra, New Mexico, a town located on the
Mora Land Grant, had its name changed to Holman, New
Mexico, after the postmaster Joseph S. Holman. 100
years later, in 1994, the pride, honor and dignity of
Agua Negra were restored with the creation of the band
Agua Negra - Música Nuevo Mexicana.
Juan Archuleta, Jr., and Angelo Archuleta, two
brothers raised in Holman, New Mexico spent much of
their childhood singing with their parents, Juan and
Sophia Archuleta. In 1992, Angelo left home to attend
the University of New Mexico in Alburquerque, New
Mexico. During his second year at UNM, Angelo began
learning to play the guitar; a long-time dream of his.
In 1994, Angelo and a fellow musician attending UNM
decided to take their music to another level and
created the band Agua Negra. Shortly, Juan Archuleta,
Jr. came onboard, first as a drummer, later as lead
vocalist. In the Spring of 2000 Agua Negra released
its first album "Pocos . . . Pero Locos" which
received extensive airplay throughout New Mexico and
Colorado. In 2002, Agua Negra released its second
album, "DaLe Shine", which would go on to receive 9
nominations from the New Mexico Hispano Music
Association and the New Mexico Hispano Entertainers'
Association. Agua Negra would be honored with
"Original Song of the Year" from the NMHMA for their
tribute song "Homenaje a Freddie Brown". Bass Player
Miguel Martínez and Drummer Chris Gutiérrez joined the
band in 2003 and Agua Negra released its latest album
"Pura Chicanada" in January of 2005. As always, the
album is prime example of "Música Nuevo Mexicana".
Agua Negra performs extensively throughout New Mexico
and Colorado, with a few select performances in El
Paso, TX and parts of Wyoming. A true variety band,
Agua Negra can be heard mixing in popular rock, blues,
and country tunes with their lively New Mexican Music.
